Let me tell you about Sarah...

Here are some of the most common myths you’ve been led to believe by others to control food that do NOT work and actually make your life HARDER

There are some very common strategies used by people who overeat (maybe you too?) that not only don’t work, they lead you to overeat and make dealing with food even more difficult.

As an Emotional Eater or someone with eating challenges even, here are the common strategies you should AVOID:


MYTH #1: Trying the latest diet – when’s the last time this has really turned out successful long term? 

Diets aren’t meant for sustainability, if they were, we would not have to keep dieting.

MYTH#2: Using exercise to counteract the food you have eaten.

We have learned to connect dieting and exercise, so when we are not on a diet we do not exercise. This is so wrong. Our bodies were made for movement and often that is challenging when we have problems with food. We need to disconnect the thought of dieting and exercise.

MYTH#3: Blame yourself for this problem.

You are smart. This is not your fault, there is no blame. Actually blame and shame are components to overeating. This is the time to start being nice to yourself. You have been too tough for too long and there is a kinder way to get out of this problem.

MYTH#4: Fear “Bad Food” and think all you can eat is “Good Food.”

There are no bad foods AND there are no good foods. Food is food. No judgment. The thoughts of eating “bad food” can send us to binge and feel ashamed. This will never get you to have peace with food!

MYTH#5: Feel upset with yourself.

I know the struggle with food can feel like a 24/7 challenge. We have to eat at least 3 times a day. Right? This can lead to a constant battle in our mind about how bad we feel.

MYTH#6: Think you can never change and are destined to be out of control with food. 

I know you have tried everything and feel at a loss. Possibly you are considering your next diet. I want you to know that doing what you have done in the past (dieting) has got you to where you are, I want you to think about doing something different.

MYTH#7: Ignore the signs your body is telling you.

Our bodies ultimately know what we need. When you were a child you knew intuitively when you were hungry and when you were full. When we have dieted for years, we have lost touch with what our bodies really need, lost touch with our body’s signals.

MYTH#8: Fear your body’s desire for food.

The dieting industry will tell you when to eat, how much to eat, and what to eat. We are told when we should feel full. I remember being told by a weight loss program leader that I should go to bed, if i am hungry, and there is no more food left on my program list. This is crazy making. I WAS HUNGRY. I want you to learn how to listen to your body, your hunger signals, and follow its lead.

MYTH#9: Working really hard to lose weight.
