Are you scared of more than goblins and ghosts at Halloween? Many of us are scared of having Halloween candy around, because we are afraid we are going to eat too much. Truthfully, there is a lot of candy on Halloween. The problem is even greater because there is the extra candy left at home and the Halloween candy that gets brought to work to share with everyone. It is hard to escape it and you might be wondering whether you will eat it or not. You might end up like many of us: you eat, feel bad about yourself and saying you will not do it again. Then later you go back and do it AGAIN!
Here are 5 tips to help you stop overeating Halloween candy.
- On Halloween night, eat your dinner meal. When you feel full and satisfied, the likelihood of overeating or mindlessly eating is lessened. I know this is not a cure- all but it will help.
- Give the extra candy to the troops, so it does not end up staying around the house. Our dentist advertises that she will take extra Halloween candy and send it to the troops. You’ll feel good that you provided a sweet treat to others who might not have any.
- Buy yourself a REAL treat on Halloween. Get yourself something you would really enjoy. It might be a sweet item from the local bakery or a savory treat that is yummy. This tip helps you to move you away from eating candy that is really not satisfying to some food that is satisfying.
- Eat while sitting down. Monitor your behavior and don’t sneak food. If you want a piece of candy then get yourself a bowl and put the candy in it, sit and enjoy it. Take a bite, taste it, enjoy it. Sit down at the table, then eat. This is an important strategy to bring more mindfulness into your eating.
- If you want some Halloween candy, eat it. Enjoy it. This is one night and it does not have to be that big of a deal.
There is nothing wrong with having candy.
The problem is when we overeat candy and feel bad physically, emotionally or mentally. When we deny ourselves what we want, we then crave it and want even more than we are hungry for.
Using these tips can take the fear out of Halloween candy. Now go out and enjoy the evening!
